WhatsApp Business app vs the Cloud API: what really changes for your shop
Most businesses in Nigeria start on the free WhatsApp Business app, and for good reason: it's on the phone you already have, it costs nothing, and your customers already know the number.
Then the shop grows. Two people need to reply. Messages get missed overnight. Someone asks "who answered this customer?" and nobody knows. That's usually when you hear about the Cloud API.
What the WhatsApp Business app is built for
The app is designed for one person replying from one phone. It gives you a business profile, a catalogue, labels and quick replies, and you can link a few extra devices.
What it doesn't give you is a team. There's no way to hand a chat to a colleague, see who is handling what, leave a private note, or know how long a customer has been waiting. Everything lives in one chat list that everyone scrolls.
What the Cloud API adds
The Cloud API is Meta's official platform for businesses that answer customers at scale. Instead of one phone, your number connects to software such as Frictionless, so a whole team can work from the same inbox.
- A shared inbox: every chat in one place, assigned to one person, so no customer is answered twice or not at all.
- Message templates: approved messages you can send after the 24-hour window closes, such as order updates and reminders.
- Ad context: people who tap your click-to-WhatsApp ad arrive with the ad attached, so you know what they saw.
- Delivery status: sent, delivered and read ticks on every reply, and a clear reason when WhatsApp refuses one.
Because it's Meta's own platform, there's no risk of your number being banned for using an unofficial app, which is what happens to numbers connected through QR-code tools.
You don't have to give up the app
This used to be the hard part: moving to the Cloud API meant leaving the app behind. Not any more.
With coexistence, your number stays on the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and connects to the Cloud API. Reply from the dashboard at your desk or from your phone on the move, and both stay in sync.
What it costs
The app is free. With the Cloud API, Meta charges your business directly for some messages, at Meta's own rates. None of it goes through us. Messages your customers send you are free.
Prices vary by country and message type, and Meta updates them from time to time. We keep the current picture on our pricing page, in plain language.
Which one is right for you
Stay on the app alone if you're one person, you reply quickly, and nobody else needs to see your chats.
Move to the Cloud API when:
- More than one person replies to customers.
- Customers wait because the one phone is busy, or off.
- You want to know how fast you really answer.
- You're running WhatsApp ads and want to know what people saw.
With coexistence, it's not a big switch any more. You add a team inbox and keep everything else.
